I've been reading the serials of this novel for the past several years as they've been coming out. This item collects the 6 Episodes, as well as a few spin offs in one convenient format.This book is military sci-fi, with very strong political undertones to it. Structurally, the books is very well written and superbly edited. As it is science fiction, the author takes liberties with the technology to bring out some pretty cool concepts to play. He is also politically savvy enough from a historical perspective that nothing he writes comes across as preachy and even folks who aren't tuned into the various ideologies will not find themselves skipping past those bits of the story. Character development is pretty strong and having the collected episodes in one novel makes it easier to see the differences from the beginning to the end. The author ends the series with room to write more in the future should he choose, but answers enough questions that the read is not left dangling from a cliff.

Did you really think The Grendel Unit was done in? No way! These boys and Monster will blow you away, their tenacity and and really deep down values will take you to their world. Gripping, suspenseful, anything can happen and it does! You can tell Bernard Schaffer really put his heart in this one. My only sadness was I hated for it to end, but oh what a great ending it was. Buy, get comfortable and slip into "The Grendel Unit", they will take you for a futuristic ride! You will not be disappointed!
As a fan of such things as Star Wars, Firefly, BSG, and Mass Effect, Grendel Unit struck a chord with me from the very first pages and never took its hand off the thrusters. The characters are incredibly well-developed, and come to life right before your eyes. I couldn’t wait to see what adventures awaited them next.
This tome-sized collection includes six volumes of space traveling goodness. The plot is detailed, but easy to follow. No constant flipping back and forth. The Grendels have a main mission to complete, and encounter plenty of bumps and setbacks along the way, but it all adds to the overall story arc. Nothing feels forced or unnecessary. Also, I’m now terrified of space worms, and I’ll leave it at that.
For longtime readers of Schaffer’s work, there’s a bit of fan service here with fun little nods to both his Superbia and Guns of Seneca 6 series. Readers of Tony Healey’s epic Far From Home series may also recognize a welcomed familiar face.
There’s plenty to love here, and even after completing the series, there’s enough left open for another adventure with the Grendels across the stars. And that, my friends, is a very good thing.
